Installing

Hintful Puzzles can be installed as an app, so it opens from its own icon and works with no internet connection.

How you install depends on your browser; find yours below. Whichever way you install, open the app once while you are still online, so it can fetch everything it needs for later.

(An installed web app still runs inside your browser. It has no access to your files or to anything else on your device. Mozilla’s What is a progressive web app? explains the mechanism.)

Android (Chrome)

Tap the menu by the address bar and choose Add to Home screen. A banner offering to install also appears briefly on your first visit; tapping that works too.

Other Android browsers have similar steps; if yours is different, see other browsers below.

iOS (Safari)

Tap the share icon by the address bar, scroll through the sharing options and choose Add to Home Screen .

Other iOS browsers usually offer the same, and if one doesn’t, install from Safari.

Chrome desktop

Click the Install app icon in the address bar.

Firefox desktop (Windows)

Click the Add tab to taskbar icon in the address bar.

Firefox on other platforms doesn’t install web apps yet. You can still play offline without installing, or install from Chrome or Safari instead.

Microsoft Edge (Windows)

Click the App available icon in the address bar, or open the menu, then More tools, Apps, Install.

Safari desktop (macOS)

Click the share icon by the address bar and choose Add to Dock.

Other browsers

Look for a command named something like “add to home screen” or “install app”. Failing that, a web search for your browser’s name plus “install PWA” finds the steps: “Samsung Internet install PWA”, for example, finds them for a Samsung phone’s built-in browser. (PWA, progressive web app, is the technical name for this kind of installable website.)

Playing offline without installing

Installing is the better way. But if your browser can’t install web apps, you can still play offline: in the preferences, turn on Allow offline use under Advanced.

You get no app icon this way. To play offline, open your browser, ignore its complaint about having no connection, and go to the puzzles’ address. A bookmark made while you are online makes that easy.
